General Surfcore Administration (Role: Admin Controller)

Posted at 9:19am on Fri, 4th Apr

This role on the site allows full content and user administration. There is no access to server or system areas so have no fear you can click away at will with no ability to damage the site.

If you have any questions about administration of the site which aren't answered below please contact me here.

The first thing you will notice is more options in your member menu. We'll step through each menu item in turn and look at what they do.

  • my account

This just your general account area where you can upload a member picture and other general account settings. Tip: it's a good idea to to check the 'Subscription settings' box. This means that you get sent an email when someone replies one of your posts.

  • weekly email

This is an area of the site that needs improvement - it shows the that you are subscribed to the weekly email.

  • comments

Any content on the site can be commented on. Comments can be published/unpublished/deleted. It is also an easy place to access the user profile of the person who published the comment. You can access their account and email them through their contact form or block their account if they're really annoying.

  • content

This provides the same administrative access to all content (blog entry, forum topic, image, page, poll, story) as the comment page.

The content can be filtered to help find something specific. Anything in a moderation queue such as articles can be checked for formatting and approved.

  • forums/image galleries

Administration of these is exactly the same. They can be added deleted and positioned higher or lower.

  • referrers/top pages/ top users/recent hits

These provide a quick overview of site statistics.

  • mass mailer

This provides a site mailing facilities. The first menu item manage lists shows all the mail groups. The instructions below describe how to send a mail to all Surfcore members.

    1. Click any of the send links and the next page will present a Compose Message' page. You should select 'hybrid html/text message' and copy and paste the prepared html into the Message Body.

    2. At the bottom you can chose 'List Assignments' - it's usually a good idea to send a test email to yourself to check that it's going to look alright when its sent out - so just check 'admin controller'

    3. You can then set the send date/time - aim for a couple of minuets in the future.

    4. Then go to send message link and this should fire off the test message.

    5. Once you have received the message and it looks okay go to manage messages select your message. Click edit and select 'Friday Arvo Surfcore Update', 'anonymous user', 'authenticated user' this should cover most of the people that are registered with the site. (Note: anonymous user is someone that applied for an account and supplied their email address but didn't activate).

  • role lists

    This should be ignored.

  • url aliases

By default new content has the URL structure (http://surfcore.co.uk/node/1554). Here you can apply more human readable URLs which is useful for static pages such as this one.

  • create content

This page allows you to create a variety of content. Page, story and blog entry follow the same format which has been explained here the important thing to remember is the <!--break--> tag which determines when the teaser finishes. How to upload images is also explained here.

Polls can be created to allow voting on any subject. Useful for competitions etc.
