Save the Waves Coalition and Chilean surfer activists celebrate the withdrawal of a proposed sewage pipeline in Chile's Surf City. The Chilean regional water company ESSBIO recently announced in Pichilemu the cancellation of its proposal to build a 1-kilometer waste pipeline that was to dump the town's sewage just offshore of the main surfing and recreational beach in downtown Pichilemu.

Asturias Government’s Proposal for Rodiles NOT Accepted by Engineers and Surfers.

On February 14, 2007 Pedro Castro, a spokesman for Asturia’s political party PSOE responded to the previous week’s protest against a dredging project at Rodiles by stating that the governmental party has decided to “repair” the river instead of moving forward with the dredging project. Castro felt this decision was a good compromise for both parties and that this would end tensions between both surfers and boaters.

New Zealand Gives the Go Ahead to Destructive Marina for a Privileged Few

The surf spot known as the Whangamata Bar on the North Island of New Zealand is being threatened by a recently approved yacht harbor that will completely destroy the break.  The approved Marina is set to be constructed over the Moanaanuanu Estuary, home to many species of fish, shellfish, seabirds, Mangroves, Eel grass, salt-marshes, and the natural sand bar.

Joshua Berry Named Chile Program Director For Save The Waves

Joshua Berry was officially hired in early June by Save the Waves Coalition, to work as program director for the next year in Chile.

Joshua Berry is the founder of one of Chile's first marine conservation organizations, Proplaya, where he still sits on the board of directors. He traveled to Chile with Will Henry in April to participate in the first of many public protests against the Nueva Aldea mill, allowing the Save the Waves director to see his skills in action.
