Gordon is a Moron

By boz at 10:20am on 24th Sep, 2006

Anybody got any good hurricane Gordon stories?what a crazy swell!I was lucky enuff to find myself at gwithian last wednesday and it was going off its nut.a twenty five k offshore was stalling a lot of people in the lip and it was 8-10 feet and hungry.heres a pretty crap pic i took just before my camera broke;
Anyway,I took out my 5'10'' fish (hey there probably wont be any swell and it fits in the car, I thought) so i was feeling a bit unprepared,but got involved anyway.gords showed its contempt by promptly drilling me and smashing the unfortunate fish into two pieces.All worth it though!

later i heard a couple of guys complaining!
"yeah its all right,too many closeouts,too windy,had better,etc."
How often does a hurricane cross half the planet and deliver perfection on our doorsteps? unbeliveable...too many cool people out there,but strangely not many out there taking grinders on the head in the line up...hmmm

Watergate/Wed GreatWestern/Thurs Fistral/Fri

Hi was lucky enough to get down to the west country on the week Gordon hit with my wife who's still learning.
It was the first time I've had really really good surf in the UK with huge swells and STRONG offshores. After a quick stop at Croyde on Tues which was too messy we headed to Newquay the next morning.
Got to Watergate mid afternoon it looked amazing from the car park so got kitted up and headed out there were a few begineers in the beach break but no one out back so off I went after not really surfing alot this year (not too out of shape but not flying with my paddling) got out after 10 and realised that these waves were pretty heavy anyway went for a few and missed them as basicaly blind due to the strong offshores.
Then found a big set coming in and myself in a good position so decided to take the 2nd wave I just made it thru the 1st and lined up the 2nd and committed any way committed and paddled in not really seeing the drop.
As I got to my feet I realised this was a good one and bassically made one of the nicest drops of my life hand in the face of the wave and down the line........
More to come

Gordon!

That was a sick swell, i surfed Perranporth everyday of it, i moved down to the 'wall of corn' 3 weeks before and had a month before i started work, the best few weeks of surfing ive ever had. I got absolutely pummeled but also had some of the best waves ive ever had!
Shame we didnt get anything remotely close to it this autumn!

:-)
