fish or thruster?

By john cockerell at 10:45am on 25th Sep, 2006

i'm an ok surfer who needs a descision made for him,
do i get a fish or thruster...
on the one hand ,love a thruster great bottom turns nice and sharpe, but dont get to surf much as in herts, so paddling can be a problem even though i keep fit,
then we have the fish great for summer slop and really nice stylewise, not had too much experience with one, had one over in oz for a season,6'6" performance qstix, great done everything that you need,
any ideas as my board has just about died and we need to replace maybe when i come down to bude on the 14th of october.
please help much thanks john

What about a hybrid?

I have a JP hybrid and a JP thruster and given the majority of waves you end up surfing in this country I end up using the hybrid over half the time: http://www.jpsurfboards.co.uk/

I use one of these when the waves are a bit fatter and it goes great, but can still cut it when it gets a bit more powerful. Goes well in just about anything up to 4-5 ft.

cheers mate good idea,what

cheers mate good idea, what size you riding had a look at the egg boards aswell, look like fun for the summer?
did you go for a classic swallow tail or rounde square?
thanks again?

Yep well got a 6'10"

Yep well got a 6'10" thruster and 6'2" fish! Fish was my latest investment and I've hardly touched the thruster since. It paddles well, floats well, and goes well in all different types of surf.

If I had to have one it would be the fish, although still love my Aloha Thruster when I get chance to use it.

The hybrid is

6'2" x 19 3/4 X 2 3/8 swallow tail with a compo leash flies in anything over a foot. The only thing I would say is when it gets hollow and bigger it can have can occasionally spin out on account of its fat tail.

And then I break out the thruster: 6'6" x 18 3/4 x 2 5/16 squash tail.

And when it gets over 10ft I use me swell board ;-)

Oh yeah - and I'm 13 stone of ripped....

Width

Hey John - I recon what Jonke says is right, go for something with the same of slightly shorter length but a bit of extra width. The board that I'm holding in my picture is a 6'4" that's 19'1/2" wide 2 1/2" thick - it's a bit old and battered now but it's a great board which you can surf well into overhead waves as long as they're not super hollow.

It's from Razor Surfboards NZ so not really an option over here. But something like that mate would be good I recon. As for how fat I am - about the same as Jonke by the sounds of things :)

Funny

How about this - just scoping out the Razor site and found a picture of my actual board taken just before I picked it up...

Razor Surfboards(from the Board Art gallery)

I thought that it might give you a better idea...

yeah that looks pretty cool

yeah that looks pretty cool think might go for the fish hey,any shops you could reccomend around the bude area?
as for lard content.. 12 and a half of beer and barbies mate!

THRUSTER

comoooon get a thruster they look way cooler and way easier to manourve and pull of some pumpin triks, youll look the bees knees
do it, andy

It's gotta be a fish

You don't mention whether you're looking at the 2 or 3 finned variety of fish? I got the same issue at the moment..... i'm looking to add to my quiver and was thinking about getting a thruster for old times sake (i currently ride a 7ft single fin magic carpet and 6'6" retro egg) but i just can't do it.... it's gonna have to be a fish -of the two finned variety......

If your worried about looking cool, then....... A FISH!!!! if you're worried about getting some straight line speed and boosting some airs..... A FISH!!!!!

and i'f you're findig paddling an issue, it's gotta be the fish hands down - nice fat front end, easy float, paddles like a boat, easy into waves..... and more down the line speed than you'd believe.....

it's got a be a fish ;)
