Miles per hour or beaufort?

By jim at 2:18pm on 17th Oct, 2006

We're thinking of changing the forecasts to give the wind speeds in the Beaufort scale.

The idea is it is easier to talk about a "force 4" wind than a "16 mph" one. It'd probably give a better feel for what the wind would be like at the break.

What do you think?

MPH

Nah.. I reckon mph is fine, it's pretty standard. Leave Beaufort for the Radio4 listeners. Even xcweather use mph as standard on their wind specific site (very useful for almost live wind checks www.xcweather.co.uk).

yeah stick with mph, id say

yeah stick with mph, id say it gives a better indication of the wind, cos you can ride a bike at 16mph and feel the wind etc.

Fair enough

Thanks for the replies boys.

We're thinking about this because we're putting charts in soon. MSW does his charts in beaufort, so we were thinking maybe we'd go the same way, but put the normal forecasts into beaufort for consistency.

Probably we'll stick with mph. Not too difficult for us to change later anyway if we change our minds.

With the hills in West wales the bike is always either 9mph or 30mph, with nothing inbetween!

Not sure as i find the mph ok, but i have my own wind forecaster. There are two small air fields on my way to my local, all i have to do is have a look at the wind flag as i drive past. Tells me if its on/off shore and how strong.
