Bournemouth Reef a Goer!

By Sam at 10:11am on 8th Nov, 2006

A bit of news all you South Coast surfers will be pleased to hear - I have been speaking to Dr Kerry Black this morning who's company ASR Ltd have designed the proposed reef for Boscombe, and it looks like all the necessary funding is in place and construction is going to start next May.

So another quality wave on our shore line has to be good news!

YEE-HAH!!!

At last, a chance of consistency on the south coast, and within cycling distance of my house! Do you know when it will be finished? I heard it would be ready for september next year.... check out this for more info.... (how do i add a pic)

More info needed

Yee - haa alright - have you seen the waves that the mount reef in NZ has been making? Proper barrels and you've got to expect that the second attempt will even better. http://surfcore.co.uk/node/1102

I met up with Kerry Last night for a beer - and he's on the road at the moment but when he gets back will get some more infomation to us.

Looking good!(from the Offshore gallery)

Today the Mount reef in New Zealand is performing with surfers being present, not quite as good as expected but since it seems one arm is completly finished (as Meades report this site) it is certainly bound to improve to be surfable to some extent.

I am attempting to highlight the positives here that are apparent to see and that is surfers are at the site having a session.
www.mountreef.co.nz is the place to monitor it , one really feels good about thinking about how it will be when it works as it is designed to - bring it on!

That's not the Mount Reef

Sorry Mate but that photo shows a bank adjacent to the reef on the inside, not the reef itself.

If you surf at Mount Maunganui you will soon see that the Mount Reef area is almost deserted, it's basically an unrideable zone, when pre reef it used to hold 50 to 60 surfers.

.

ok today it is really breaking and has improved

evidencethis will now be a consistant "footprint" of a barrel that will "rule" eat our boardshorts skeptics
"its ALIVE"despite all the dirty reviews and time that people have been critisizing the reef -the right hand half finaly finished "is alive". soon to be the promise of having the endless summer and a "pipeline " - please send donations so the left side can be also finished to specifications - this is so important for the future of surfing reefs and world wide accessibilty to good surf - both sides starting to work like this just think what it will be like when the swell and tide are right - this is just so " it will be so good and worth the wait.) Every other reef project promoter should be seeing this as what the potentual is for their beach a tubing reef like this and we will see 50 m barrels when conditions permit. at last the skeptics are proved wrong and can finally "eat their words"

mount reef half complete improving.

I dont believe any of this stuff being levelled at KB - hes a staright guy that just want to improve surf for everybody and puts his soul and heart into it with a minimal return for himself he's not in it for the money - just watch the RonJon surf pool success , you will all see that ASR will fully rule and a wave of success will just " blow the critics away" the skeptics just dont know the "secret weapons" that the elite team of ASR scientists have as their responses to critics - they will just be an entirely new way of approaching the idea of artificial reef and wave pool technology that will finally silence all the critics once and for all -every supporter that "weathered the storm" will beneit and the critics will be so sorry that they had little faith.

Wasting resources is not environmentally friendly

Kerry Black uses vast amounts of ratepayers money to build a lousy pile of plastic bags at Tay st and then flies off to surf indo on the proceeds, what a jerk ! time we stopped such wasteful behaviour and used our resources more sensibly.

"If Dr. Mead’s other projects are anything to go by, the surfers in St. Francis Bay are in for a real treat. “In good conditions the right will be a very good barreling wave,” he says, adding that, “If you look at the Mt. Reef project in New Zealand, once it was completed we’ve seen 50 meter long barrel rides on that wave. And we are looking at probably a 100 meter long wave in St. Francis, so there will be a section in that which will be a high quality wave for competent to expert surfers.” "

opanake nearing completion as well

More money would speed up completion of Opunake's problem plagued artificial surf reef, its designer says.
Yesterday, oceanographer Kerry Black, of ASR Ltd (Amalgamates Solutions and Research) said a bigger budget would reduce the amount of time it took to build the reef. ``We would get out in shorter weather windows and push through the winter and that would make it happen faster,'' Mr Black said. He did not think that would be a good use of public money though. Opunake's coastline was a very difficult environment to work in and required extreme caution with costs, Mr Black said. ``Those costs can blow out very quickly, because every time you mobilise a crew there are costs involved. So we need long weather windows.'' Mr Black says ASR was given a strong message from the Opunake Surf Reef Trust that quality and budget were the primary concerns and time was never of the essence. Crews were only mobilised when they knew there was a substantial weather window and, unfortunately, there were a lot of waves this year, he said. ``I've always said that it is two months of actual construction time, but that could spread over one or two years, if the waves happen to be large during that period.'' Mr Black admitted there had been delays but that didn't mean failure. ``I think it is always possible to have delays when you have got uncertainty in the ocean. It is a very difficult environment to work in and the construction budget is limited.'' He remained confident the reef would be completed despite concern from the public about its viability. ``The reef can, and will, be finished. Absolutely it will work.'' Mr Black says the technology is not experimental but there is a learning curve. involved.``There are aspects of the engineering that are novel.''
taranaki times

For ocean-based artificial surfing reefs, the enthused scientists and staff of ASR are not only designing the reefs, but they offer a turnkey, “cradle to grave” organization, which means they also design the construction and deployment methods that put the reefs in the water, and then prefer to do the dirty work themselves. -ASR

bornemouth is going to be so cool

mount reef half complete improving and the bournemouth folk have got so much to look foreward to -they shpould be grateful for the suffering that has been part of the journey and help finance both reefs to get a better result -common bournmouth surfers help the mount people out with some donations you can see on the web site what you are instore for digin and donate on the mount site and the same karma will come your way , help ASR get the dream fulfilled , the ronjon pool is going ballistic and the other pools asr has planned in UK will all be massive employement and amenity facilities -no more travelling for perfect surf (if you are lucky enough for it to be thereat the right time , bournmouth has the secrets to give hundreds and hundreds of days a year surf windowsmany more than first thought of -so many that you will have to buy tickets and line up to get a session in the water -thats where the 24/7 wave pools will be necessary -its like uk becomes world surfing central and all due to ASR_research , nows the time to help the mount people realise their dream and help ASR-research pay to finish it so that both sides can work as well as the right side is starting to show its real potentual at last -you cant help but look at that and see the 50m barrels forming in the right wave and wind circumstances - you just cant help but want to share that vision and make it true -help asr make it true.

more claims and promises

I don't know what you think you are doing , in case you have not noticed, there are some pissed of people that believed in all the earlier promises .
You are not helping ASR one bit by making more claims and promises, let them deal with the earlier ones first.

i believe that kerry is the most honest person on the planet

if somethings going wrong its the doing of lack of itelligent support from his people, some monkeys I have been told dont know the difference between a swell and a wave causing the dredge to flounder -but thats not his fault and i know he is saving money to make up for their mistakes. Everyone knows that he will use his own money and also make the people who make mistakes work harder for the rectification of them -thats as honest as it gets and all will be "made up" for others ineptness -thats the sort of guy that kerry is. he is the sort of person that will not rest untill every promis made in every surfing magazine will be kept to the letter even if it kills him. The trouble is people dont know the moral fortitude he has.
I know theres another getting his parents to bale him out for his mistakes and they can hold their heads high wherever they go.
Shame on the detractors -just watch them do a total turnaround and fix every critic for good.

more evidence -every day morejust for those that dont believe in sucess heres more evidence of the surfers comming back to the mount reef. this is some of the best surf seen there since the right half has been finished - just keep saving up for helping with the finish of the left hand side and more of these can be built everywhere for every surfer to enjoy. its just getting better every day , and thats on a upward grade to real sucess , every other reef in Shaw Meades will start at what this one finishs at as I know they redesign every reef to keep improving so the new reef projects will offer surfers so much more -keep the dolalrs flowing into the trust as those who are sending the dollars are the true believers and those are the true surfers who will get to talk to the ASR designers at the reefs as VIP's.

benjis got it right with the asr-research and science

mount reef half complete improving
the science shown on benjis post is so good that most scientists dont even understand it - but mangabui is proving it correct with the waves sthat are breaking now.

Its cyclone season above kiwi and theres one whopper there right now spo watch and download the waves breaking as evidence that more money should be spent on bournemouths reef , you can bet the buracrats are already putting the squeeze on the ways to build it and it will need much more money for sure , the effort ASR puts into it means they shopuld be paid more as well for the large amounts that they have gone without to be able to get where they are with construction -for once they should be allowed construction design freedom to say what is necessary to get a perfect result.

mount reef breaking invites surfers to its shoresmore evidence that the mount is creating interest amongst surfers now the right side is finished - and everyone said that it was not good. So mif thats the case why are surfers flocking there? as the picture shows - bourmouth waill be the same if not better as the new super technology from the wavepools in orlando and asrs's super hitech secret laboratorty will be applied so there will be many more there than the mount -one cant help imagine how big a hit it will be -bring it on say the real surfers who understand what asr are trying to do for them . they are the ones that will be reaching into their pockets to help out with the migration of the ronjon pool to the uk when the need is there , they are the ones that will welcome asr at every beach as heroes in the quest for the perfect waves for everybody. Some people just have no vision and cant see that every great mission has test and trials along the way , just like asr directors have foresaken any personal gain from what they do -its for the benefit of the surfing world that they do it. dont listen when people give negatives about them just donate to help the big picture come to pass.
"its ALIVE"despite all the dirty reviews and time that people have been critisizing the reef -the right hand half finaly finished "is alive". soon to be the promise of having the endless summer and a "pipeline " - please send donations so the left side can be also finished to specifications - this is so important for the future of surfing reefs and world wide accessibilty to good surf - both sides starting to work like this just think what it will be like when the swell and tide are right - this is just so " it will be so good and worth the wait.)
