what is wrong with people?????????

By kingfiremike at 4:04pm on 22nd Nov, 2006

Guys, check out the link below - it's a story about some n*bb*r from Syney's north beaches who's been assualting various people at his local breaks.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/surf-rage-attacker-in-plea-mixup/2006/11/22/1163871469069.html

dunne

Localism has always gone hand in hand with surfing to some extent or other, ever since the dog town boys in the sixties saw the arrival of punk surfing, and with any sport that involves pushing the limits there will be a vein of aggression in it's athletes that occasionally boils over.

surf rage 01

In recent years, even in ol' Blighty, we see localism pop up it's angry head every now and then, and increases in numbers of people in the water, particularly beginners, are blamed. To some extent maybe it's fair enough - some people do need to be told if they're in the wrong place...

surf rage 02

Anyhow, it seems like this guy took it too far, and fortunately looks like he'll be punished for being such a d*ck. But is he the exception??? - or are we seeing more and more stories like this cropping up?? Is the soulfulless of surfing being replaced by an urgent and aggressive desire to 'max out your wave count' and f*ck the kooks?????

The more and more people

The more and more people that end up in the sea, the more tension your going to get i guess. I think we've probably all been pissed off at the guy thats stolen a nice wave, but isnt it a lot easier to chill out and enjoy your surf instead? Personally, ive only really seen any real aggression when the seas really heaving with people, and bright yellow swell boards!

Itsovermyhead

Dick head

Basically just because he's a surfer doesn't mean he's cool - the dude's probably got a whole lot of other issues going on - (I'm on a roll now) - in fact it sounds like sexual frustraion to me! He's not getting it eh? :)

Surf Rage

Surfing isnt about aggression. If I am in a bad mood I will surf a quiet spot and get my self together. If you enter the water angry & it is crowded you will get frustrated and lash out at a kid or kook. This fella is obviously angry at something and is too cowardly to face up to it so he takes it out on some one in the water where he has the upper hand. I'm suprised he can see with those testicles hanging over his eyes.
Surf, chill, enjoy and spread the stoke my children.

A bully?

Personally this guy is just a bully, but instead of having a play ground he has the beach to intimidate people whom he feels can't fight back, thus increasing his own ego and his own sense of self importance - he is probably a really insecure guy who feels unloved who needs to resort to aggression and power plays to increase his feeling of self importance.

But he's still an absolute w*nker who needs to grow up and become an adult!!

Tool

Yeah the guy does need to sort out some kinda Anger Management.. I've been in the water when he goes off and everyone just reckons he's a tool.. He shouts at anyone even **thinkin** about paddling for a wave he's going for..

Localism gets worse than a shouting at that's for sure..

Hey Mikey mate, Croyde looks like it's firing on all four at the moment, you headed down?

Karma

Well its all a bit silly really when you consider we are just a bunch of plonkers flapping about in the sea achieving nothing for anyone else but ourselves. It must look stupid to other people who don´t surf, a bit like fisherman fighting over a fish. Karma will get him in the clink when he´s dodging soap full time. That was pretty deep wasn´t it.

Well who knows it might be a thing of the past in in the not so distant future when surf parks are everywhere and you can pay for your own wave. After reading the recent article in surfer mag I´m mad for it.

who's to blame?

i've read the other peoples comments about this guy, you're right he's a tool, ive read alot of comments on this subject, i've talked about it in the water, over the phone, beer in the pub, But where does the blame lie? how many surf shop owners actually tell new buyers of boards the rules in which we all expect our fellow surfers to adhere to? how many internet companies issue a leaflet explaining the drop in rule when selling a board? i myself have approached "surfers" (mostly learners)and the other exceptionally greedy few about dropping in, snaking, paddling round, you know the type! and have either got a gobfull back telling me they'll shove my board side ways up my arse or they plead innocence/ignorance, either way they have to learn, i'm not an angry man but people like this do challange my good nature, i'm apposed to duking it out on the beach with someone who is clearly in the wrong (by principle alone i'll fight)physicaly and mentally i'll make my stand but should it have to come to this? who is to blame? is there any wonder the UK will end up like oz and california? with sellfish attitudes and the lack of knowledge in the water surely things are on the way to a meltdown? what say you?

Agroman & my own personally rant about stuff that annoys me!

It is pretty funny to be honest, its not like he actually did anything like murder someone! I can see why people get so f**king annoyed. Fistral beach is about 200 yds from my house and you get agro all the time. Its annoying having to drive miles away from your doorstep to try and avoid the crowds when your local beachie is a few minutes walk away. Its often saffers and aussies who are the main culprits, telling you to get out of the way in your own f**cking country. If i went to Aus and started screaming at them, it would be a different story. I occasionally flip out in the water and run the odd kook down in August on my longboard but hey for me its all about getting my share of the waves. Thats all everyone wants. Quite simply its starting to get to the point where there simply arent enough waves to go around at some spots. Everyone wants sett waves and it usually the same 3-4 people who take them all, surf stupidly close to you, drop in up your arse and complain when they blatantly snaked you on the drop in full knowledge that you had already popped up and caught a wave (you know who you are!)It sucks but thats life, solution to the problem would be to make anyone on a foamer stay in with the bathers and ban shit people from the best peaks (North Fistral). To be honest im totally ticked off in general with summer and i am now happy to have autumn and winter to surf in relative peace and quiet, if i here one more aussie on a loadspeaker telling the guys out front to move out of the surfing area i will go mad. Other thing is lifegaurds moaning about people surfing parts of 'Gay Bay' (towan) where a surfing ban applies in summer. When its got some swell or is totally stormy 3ft+ why does it matter. There are no bathers when its like that, if they had swum out to the lineup then the lifegaurds would have probably dragged them out by that point! The other thing that annoys me is the lifegaurds who think it is necessary to drive around the lineup on the RNLI jetski, doing donuts, f**king up the waves and generally nearly running people over. Bunch of f**king wa**ers. Nevermind the pollution/waste of fuel, these guys are getting paid to waste your donations! Surely the ski doesnt need to be in the water all day in gay bay when its 2foot and clean, its a joke. I thought the point that you are a lifegaurd is that your actually trained to swim and bring people in using various un-motorised watercraft. Whats the point if youre on a ski, anyone could do that. *i do have my NARS before some smart arse starts having a pop by the way.

Sorry about my rant but im not suprised that guy got so angry. If you ever surfed narrabean then you would appreciate the chaos and aggro that exists in the water.

Sorry if i offended,

Rob<

Get a rule book!

When i first started surfing, I purposefully stayed away from the pack, and the locals, for my own safety and for theirs, also because i knew i wasn't good enough to get the quality waves etc. I'm not sure i knew of any rules at this point but i knew my own rules about respect and politeness. Now i'd call myself one of the locals and despite not being as good as many other people i can still sit in the pack, it took a few years to learn and befriend people but all in all its worth it...that was the calm and collected bit, here comes the shit heading straight for that fan...but who the fuck do all these fucking mid-life fucking crisis surfers think they are paddling out straight past everyone else, spooning all their waves and whooping at their fucking straight handers. Fuck off! sit on the inside, run before you can fucking walk and accept that in two years your foam fucking board will probably be sat in your garage gathering dust with your mouldy wetsuit and a £3000 bike that got used once. I accept new people, and people have to learn, we all had to, but it seems the current crop of new people to the water aren't aware of any rules, have no regard for anyone's safety and respect for anyone's property...namely my board and my limbs! I thoroughly agree with yan that surfboards should be sold with a rule book, it would help me, you and anyone just starting. Its becoming fairly dangerous, self-inflicted injuries are common, i can live with that, but i reckon the moment someone causes me some serious damage i don't know if i'll be able to hold my anger in.

So there. Obviously the water is everyone's...we just need to be abiding by the rules put there for our own safety and the safety of others. And being aware of how we affect the other people using the water.

Rules

I couldnt agree more!

rule books

i second the opinion, i couldn't agree more!

reading that has helped...

..me because i am a begginer and knowing that you guys (being intermediate/really good) or regulars have certain spots i mean i wasnt aware of rules which could of been a problem obviously but i am very aware of other people and would ask if i was in the way so they could surf happily whislt i learn and hopefully make some new mates, but with the information i have gathered from reading the comments you guys have written i can obviously do my best to abvoid agro or upsetting any one.

always be honest you may offend/upset some people but always remember your probably helping more people like you guys have helped me!
And does any one know any good begginer spots in the UK?

Cheers

Beginner spots in the UK

Pretty much any beachbreak is good for beginners, avoid rivermouths as rip currents are often common and just dont go out on the big overhead + days. Cornwall is consistant and usually has something for learners, rarely flat. NE coasts has some amazing beachies too. Depends where you are!

cheers!

cheers!
ill give them a look in =]
