Great Site

By Fluid Motion at 11:41am on 9th Feb, 2006

Hi there,

I have just come across your site today ...and i have to say, i think your forecast layout is amazing.

At last a forecast site that covers Blyth Beach (my main break), Alot of really usefull information on the forecasts and very easy to read.

Great work guys, and keep up the good work.

jim

Thanks!

After spending months working on it, it's good to finally get some positive feedback.

Enjoy using the site, any suggestions just send them our way.

site suggestions

i agree the site seems rather good. i particularly like the display of swell period and direction. alythough my local break isn't on it there are some close enough indicators for me.

only one suggestion at this point: perhaps the forecast could go further into the future, even if the detail was reduced i'm sure it would be good.

anyhoo, keep up the good work.

jim

Cool picture!

Is it photoshopped, or do you really have a keyboard-surfboard?! If so, can you type while on a wave?

Thanks for the feedback, it's something we'll look into.

site layout excellent!

Hey, incredible easy to read!
congrats!

É Rocha galera!

jim

Hey, cheers!

I see you're a fellow web designer so it's good to hear your opinion. Have you done any surfing sites?

There's just the two of us here working out of my backroom. It's a hard slog doing everything ourselves but at least it gives us freedom to take surfcore in whatever direction we want. We think we've got the feel about right - because we're a UK site we want to use colours from UK waves - greens and grays. No hibiscus flowers here (at least not till we launch our Hawian version!)

We only just put the new layout with curvy columns up a couple of days ago. There'll probably be some layout changes over the next couple of weeks as well - we really need to find somewhere for the search thing.

If everything goes alright I'ma put up a couple of new widgets tonight. Nothing major. There's something I've been working on for the user pages and a couple of other bits and bobs in the galleries.

Surfguru

in fact I made this forecasting website for brazilian waters: surfguru.com.br, it works kinda like yours, we also have a frequented forum and some news, but no user area for now.
I am planning to completely remodel the site soon, and I confess I want to follow some of your good ideas! I would want to ask your permission!
I liked the forecast tables layout, and the wave sets coming into the maps are great!
I use data gathered from WW3 to create maps and also tables, you may want to see the tables by clicking somewhere at the map at right. My tables are 6 years old now, i should rethink the concept.
I also was already thinking about the photos and the Blog, and appreciated the way you formatted the whole thing!
Please also take a look at the SPECTRO display:

I Finally uploaded those

I Finally uploaded those changes I mentioned - check out the pictures in the article previews on the front page. Pretty sweet even if I do say so myself :)

Let's face it - on the web everyone learns how to make cool stuff by looking at how other people did things and building on it. So yeah, feel free to take inspiration from us. So long as it's not just ripping it off we're flattered. Probably we can work together sharing photos or somthing in future?

I don't want to fill up the surfcore forum too much with chatting about web design and that, but sometimes I hang out on alt.html. Hook up with me there if you want to talk some more about geek stuff.

nice site

Really nice, easy to to use format, only problem is that the estimates on wave height seem to be a little on the big side, for instance Lahinch in Ireland is going to be overhead wit a six foot swell at 7 seconds. I dont think i've ever seen it over head there on that kind of swell. how do you predict the height at the beach? it seems a little too optimistic, still nice format though,
tim

Made some adjustments...

Cheers mate. We had loads of good feedback yesterday from Magicseaweed users, and made some adjustments. If you surf at Lahinch let us know if we get it wrong - pretty flat there today though...

Might be best to start a new forum topic if you have a specific question.

forecasts

Where the hell are the forecasts??

i have searched the whole site and cannot see anything that points me in the direction of any forcasts.

Confusion

Does the site look like this in your browser?

Forecasts

Alot of people are used to menus on the left, we use mainly tabs...

Click the bit that is circled in red on the image, and you should be sweet...let us know if anything else doesn't seem right.

costello

forecasts

All i get on my screen is the Home and Community tabs the other two are missing.

i'll click where the tab is meant to be and see if that works.

Cheers

forecasts

No Sorry, i tried to click over the area where 'Forecasts' should be but it doesnt happen.

jim

Strange...

Never heard of this before. Do you know which browser you use? What appears instead of the tab?

Anyway, you can get to the forecasts for now by just clicking this link or typing surfcore.co.uk/forecasts into the address bar.

jim

Ok, found the problem...

This seems to be due to a bug in Internet Explorer 5. To be honest, we hadn't tested with versions that far back.

Anyway, I'll add this to my list of things to fix.

In the meantime, it might interest you that we recomend Firefox. This (and most other) websites will work much better with it. Internet Explorer 5 is eight years old now, that's a pretty long time in computers.

forecasts

ok, i got it working now with the link you provided. cheers, looking forward to checking it out now.

By the way, i am using the works tinternet, so i could hardly turn round and request a newer browser to surf the net with, whilst i should be working huh!!?

Thanks again!!

The community bit

Hey, just checking in.

Seems a good site - like the forecasts are fairly useful (but I'll let you know for sure when there is some surf to predict!)

One problem - The 'community' link at the top, I get the list of stuff, but cant click on anything but 'carbon calc' (like the environmental element to the site by the way). The others, including forums, dont come up as a link. (Mac OSX, Netscape 7.1, by the way)

Huh?

Huh?

Why did my comment come up at the top, and not following everyone elses?

Am I being stupid? (Wouldnt be the first time)

jim

Spose It works a bit differently...

Basically, we think it is better to let people reply to each other's posts than to the whole forum, so everyone's conversations don't get mixed up together.

So everyone's posts go under the thing they replied to (plus a little to the right). So since you replied to Fluid Motion's original post, your post goes under his.

Hope this is clear(?)

jim

Netscape 7.1

Ok. If I remember correctly, NS7 is basically the same as Mozilla 1.0. I'll add it to my list of old browsers to test with.

However, according to a quite well known developer site, NS7 only has 0.4% of the browser market, so I hope you understand if it's not at the top of the list.

Porthcawl ??

Love the site - seems accurate, and well layed out.
any chance of Porthcawl being added or is that 2 close 2 Aberavon to make it worthwhile?
I'm either going there or Newgale most of the time, occasionally gower.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Things Unridden!
Don't you just Love Waves,

We could add Porthcawl

We could add Porthcawl - we try not to add more breaks if there's a good indicator break nearby. The next couple of weeks are going to be a bit manic for us as we've got to move house/office - today actually!

I've also got to go down to Cornwall to the Board Masters and a few of the festivals so won't be back until begining of August. But we'll have a look into it then - if that's okay?
