Choosing a van for towing

By jago25_98 at 11:33am on 2nd Jan, 2007

I need to get a new vehicle for towing a caravan.

Thing is,

this would be my main vehicle so I need something small to be economical (i.e. Rascal)

but,

I need something big enough to tow a caravan (1200kg) every now and then (i.e. Transit or Sprinter)

and,

a van to get changed in would be nice.

Any ideas on where I can get more info on this?

Kangoo

What about the Renault Kangoo - their about the right size and mate of mine used to be able to bed down in it - during the summer leave the back doors open and have your feet sticking out.

Try an Ex AA van - ccome up

Try an Ex AA van - ccome up on ebay all the time - less than 100k on the clock, go for the 102bhp model - i think it's a 1.9TD and they'll pull a truck. They've also been well serviced and maintained and very economical to run for a van.

but they only come in yellow. Check out ebay - there's a guy in the midlands who sells em...

obitim

My new van..

Not too sure about towing... but i just got a new mercedes vito that im gna kit out in the back to become my own little camper. Il try and get some pics up when i start.

mpg though?

Still trying to choose!

What van gets the best mpg (fuel efficiency). I'm used to 50mpg in my Feista van. A move to something VITO sized seems to drop that to 20mpg. That would make a big difference. I think it's the wieght that causes it; ability to load carry that we wouldn't be using.

What mpg does a VITO get?
Those AA vans do look like a good bet as well - thanks for that!

The VITO looks great but seems about 3 times more expensive than similar vans. And while I could afford it I prefer to keep my cash out of site. It's nice driving a banger.

6 speed vans

Have used the Vivaro and they go great, nice seating position, loads of room, loads of power, 6 speed box and very suitable for towing, have towed boats etc at good speeds, and had no problems.
