Whites

By john at 8:37pm on 9th Jan, 2007

Did anyone see the doc on tv the other night about great whites around the uk ?. Kinda makes you wonder :)

Nope

Nope what did they say? More arround or less? - 'cause I've heard that in South Africa it's becoming a real problem which they're trying to keep quite - to protect the tourist industry...?

whites

Seems some cornish folk have seen large gray and white sharks when out fishing. The water temp is within there range and there is no reason for them not to visit our shores, its just a matter of time.
They have breading whites in the med. Pros and cons, if we have a comfermed sighting, line ups will be a lot thiner. But you go swimming with them you could be eaten :)

RE : Whites

Hi John

The issue of the presence or absence of the rarer species of larger shark (GW, Mako, Bull specifically in this case) in UK waters is a hotly debated subject. Indeed, Totesport the bookmaker is offering odds of 25-1 that a Great White specimen will be caught off British shores in 2007. Personally, having dived with Great Whites in South Africa, and surfed avidly for 20 years both here and in shark infested waters abroad, I am not convinced that an attack is forthcoming. One can reasonably assume sightings in the lineup first I would think. Remember the White is cautiously inquisitive outside of its normal hunting grounds in reality. We have yet to have a confirmed sighting in this country of a Great White, let alone by a surfer, and we have never witnessed an unprovoked attack on man by any shark species within UK waters. There are many reasons as to why this is the case. I personally feel increasing levels of pollution, particularly in the Channel in the last ten years plays a part, but to what extent is hard to address. In many ways I hope that we do see this awesome predator in our seas as it is so misunderstood, but as a surfer it is not something I like to think about in the lineup.
Wishing you great waves, peace and happiness. Mark

Whites

It wont happen, if it does, who cares, the chances of getting eaten are so remote it is more likely you would get attacked by a seal. Nasty bites! Ive seen it happen! But Great whites, i dont think so.

Plus it will thin the lineup in summer which would be nice here in Cornwall. Shame we cant book a great white for a guest appearance in Newquay(Fistral) in August!

Rock on!

San Diego Shark Attack

It is indeed rare but it does happen. Check out this story from San Diego:

I think as the program said

I think as the program said the question is not when will we, it's how comes we haven't yet. Seeing as they have been sighted around the bay of biscay and as far as brittany. There is also a large breeding colony in the med.
Their main food group(which is not man)are seals which we all know are here, and the sea temp in the summer is around the same as of the coast of south africa where they are commonly sighted.
i have lived and surfed in areas that have shark nets, and have seen reported shark attacks from bull sharks, upto 3 meters long and reguarly had dolphins come up beside me which scares the hell out of you.
But remember that more people are killed by faulty toasters than snakes, sharks and spiders so the chances are so slim but we could all benefit from a little thinning in the line ups?
