plastic bottles left on the spots by surfcamps

By Anchor point local at 12:27pm on 6th Apr, 2007

the protection of environment is a must nowadays with all the pollution that the humanbeen is cosing, and especially the surf camps run by people that don't care about how clean are the spots where they bring there clients to surf, and where THEY surf as well,it's good thing to includ a daily bottle of water in the surf package , but leaving them on the spots is a bad one.
for example if a surfcamp brings 20 people on the beach, during one week, and don't collect there garbage, it's 140 plastic bottles thrown on the beach, in 1 month it's 560 bottles, in 1 year it's 6720 plastic bottles, who must care about how clean are the spots more than surf camps, nature is offering them a way to make money to keep doing what they like, so why kill it this way?
i will not mention names in order to keep my integrity, if anyone concerned read this post, i wish it could be helpfull to change there behavior

beach waste

Do you have someone particular in mind when you say these things? I am sure I speak for most people on this forum and say that we ARE concerned about the environment, most surfers I know will get involved in rubbish clearing on beaches, offsetting carbon emissions etc and I certainly havent come across anyone dumping plastic bottles. I understand it must really piss you off especially on your own break and especially if its non locals who are dumping. That sucks. I suppose I am getting defensive because I am 'guilty' of staying at a camp in morocco, but they were so respectful of the country and local surfers, customs and environment, and would never take a large group to any break; it just seems a shame that you are making a generalisation like this? But thanks for bringing it to our attention, wishing you happy (rubbish free) surfing, Bex

strange

may be the week u've been there, they were miraculously clean and aware of not coming all of them to the line up, or may be there was a natural selection of people surfing our break, i was born at anchor point, just in front of it, i surf since my 10 years old, i can stop surfing for some reason, but keep living in front of it,no body will tell me what is happening close to my door step, especially someone that has been for a small period of time here, but i'm really happy to hear that you had a great experience in our country, that is the thing that we want u to keep in mind, you and all people that visit our country. and this is what pushed me to post this topic. in order to smash who is concerned, and remind every body of a way of beeing that is not always the way people act .everybody knows the theory and expresses his self really well about it and no more

What a load of rubbish!

When I was in Morocco back in 2001 I did notice a lot of plastic bags and bottles. From what i saw there wasn't a refuse collection service and most of the rubbish was just put in a hole that had been dug outside of the village. Some strong wind and before you knew it the rubbish was scattered every where...

I did see westerners who didn't seem to realise where they were and left rubbish all neatly tied up next to where they had camped expecting the local rubbish truck to pick it up. It was soon ripped to pieces by stray dogs.

I think the message is that if you're a surfer travelling to developing countries you've got to remember that the same services that you might take for granted over here will not be available so you have to be aware of these things - especially rubbish...

It's not really what happens

Dear Sam,
i agree that there is a collection services but that is not as efficient as the european one, but mainly the surf spots in this area are fare from the houses mainly where the service is provided.
Boilers for example is far from any village, and the collection service doesn't see any need to go there as it's a wild place, same in mystery as it is a place where live one family n front of the spot that try to keep the place as clean as they can, and i can tell u that 80% of the people that go to those places are surfers, that are 50% of the time with a surf camp.
The purpuse of this topic is to make people aware of this problem as it's beguining to piss us off, especialy the people that try to advertise for having more business but don't even think for the future of this place.
i hope that this will serve for something even if it will make somepeople angry, especialy the ones concerned

Thanks

Just want to say thanks for taking time to post about it. Nothing ruins the vibe of a good surf session more than when you have to walk past grotty rubbish on the way down to the wave...

In fact check this out a recent report by the Marine Conservation Society says that UK beach litter is up by 90%!!! Man that's depressing...
