Stand-up paddle surfing

By scruvis at 9:45pm on 5th Jun, 2007

Anyone tried this new sport?

I have been doing it for a few months now, and is so much fun, but it took a couple of sessions to get to grips with it.

coolio, Are you able to compete in the paddle round the pier on a stand-up paddle board, or do you have to be paddleing prone..?

Please check www.amoebasurf.com

You can do the main paddle

You can do the main paddle on the Sunday I think. Or at least that's how I read it on the website. What board are you on? An Amoeba? I have a Starboard 12'6" waiting for my carbon paddle. I rode a few boards before getting mine. The Starboard seemed the most progressive. The Surtech soft top was too tippy and slow to paddle, the Laird Surftech was a barge at something over 32" wide. Nice to paddle but just didn't turn on the wave. I rode a Circle One the other day but it was super flexy, and I couldn't turn it in the crowded surf. I emailed the guys at standuppaddlesurf.co.uk and I think they are going to the paddle round the pier.

Loving doing SUP, especially very few people seem to be doing it yet. I'm sure that will change though

carbon paddles

Carbon paddles have good response, but I have heard about people getting wrist, arm and shoulder fatigue, due to the lack of forgiveness in the shaft and blade.
The big one that I have found is the sharp edge of the blade, shattering the outer glass layer of my board.. not so good.
The plastic bladed paddles, don't seem to do this...

Plastic blades are cool to

Plastic blades are cool to start, but the weight saving of a carbon blade and shaft is pretty dam good. How did you shatter the glass on your board? Were you hitting the board on purpose ;-). My carbon paddle flexes nicely so no stress injuries so far.

Had any good days recently?

Praise the Laird

haha SUP looks amazing! I wish I had one, it would completely solve waiting in a crowd at bournemouth (65 people in this sunday!).

It's shame the boards are about £900 and the paddle costs the same amount as my shortboard!
Oh well, looks like the inside for me, a turd burglar for life!

you're looking in the wrong

you're looking in the wrong place if you can only find boards for £900. I found some for under £800 and using a decent enough alloy paddle which I got for £50. Bargain. I reckon I'm getting 10x more days on the water. Even heading out when flat to keep fit.

Stand up surfing

This looks interesting, looks very soothing almost hawaiian Amy B

Yep I back track - checked

Yep I back track - checked out the amoeba surf site - it is hawaiian! DO you reckon I could have a go on a Mini Mau with this? I might see if I can pinch my brothers next time i'm up in Wales and have a go!Amy B

I wreckon you would struggle on a mini mal, you really need a lot of floatation to keep you you up there.

We have a huge 12footer here ideal for a little test go.

you are going to need

you are going to need someting in the region of about 28 - 30 inches wide for stability and about 12ft long to get the best from all conditions. I'm riding a Starboard SUP and it is awesome. I've been lake paddling, river paddling coastal paddling and surf paddling on it and it is such good fun. Cost me £800 but I was paying £70 a month to be a member of the gym so the board will be paid for soon enough, as I've left the gym and headed for the water!!

SUP Surfing in Newquay

Just to let you know we have a stock of 12'6" Starboard SUP boards, normal and Carbon paddles which can be rented in Newquay. This is probably a good idea, before you dish out hundreds of pounds!

You are welcome to use our private changing rooms 100 meters from Newquay Bay, we will give you some advice before you take to the ocean.

If anyone is interested do let me know, you can contact me on 07966 259 839 or SUP@errantsurf.com

Looks cool

Hey Check out the DVD 'All aboard the crazy train' It has a good section with this stand up paddle surfing thing! It looks hard!

SUP

I really want to get into this, my mates hired a couple from Tunnel Vision in Newquay, one got on really well stright away, the other struggled. I already longboard the small days, but this would allow you to sit even deeper than the longboarders and catch the waves so early! trhen it would just be a case of negotiating a path through the shortboard soup. Could possibly use the paddle as a prodder to push them out of the way! Been getting far too much abuse recently from certainly individuals at North Fistral who think they own the place. I ride boards from 5,8 to 9,6, they only have a go when im on either my 9,1 or 9,6. Funny that isnt it! Most of them just get in the way anyway, and they all drop in on each other then moan when youre up on a wave cos your riding a longboard.

Some people suck ass!

A lot of fun was had at this event, with many paddlers showning up.

SUP Sucks!

Stand up paddling sucks, the riders always stay right out the back and don't give anyone else a chance at getting the waves. Also I think they are very dangerous, I would not like one of those paddle's round my head or for that matter those huge boards. What is the point in this? I hope it is just a fad! I was not happy to see stand up paddle board riders out at my local break recently, it just makes an already crowded break even harder for others to enjoy.

Danger

It looks fun but i agree, they are dangerous and when your local break is North Fistral then it cvouldnt be worse!

Ps, I tried to contact errant as per their above comment and they pretty much ignored me, wont be using them again for anything!

useless!

waveseeker

Easy to be a kook on a sup but...

The whole idea for me with SUP is not to paddle out a fistral when it is firing, but to explore and surf other breaks that surfers can't/won't surf due to currents, locations etc...

Also - there are far more surfing kooks out there right now than SUPers ;)

For more information check out stand up paddle surfing uk or the British Stand Up Paddle Association as they all have lots of good info - and BSUPA have membership insurance if you are thinking of having a go.
