Muurikka

By Flipper at 3:16pm on 10th Jun, 2007

Looking to hire a yurt I came across a company (Stunning Tents) who hired out and sold amazing tents from all over the world. The tents were a bit pricey for us (unfortunately as they are gorgeous) but they had a cooking section with some really cool stuff.

I love surfing, camping, travel adventure and eating yummy food. I'm always on the look out for interesting recipes, especially for food outdoors, there is definately more to it than burgers on a barbie. The muurikka made me think of all of those things and I was sucked in and bought one...

I'm so chuffed with it! It's a Finnish grill hob - bascially a thick metal dish, mine is 58cm across, with handles on the side and 3 legs which screw in and out making it very portable, easy to carry to the beach etc. You stick it on top of your fire, give it a while to heat up and then cook on it. I've only had it 3 weeks but have used it every weekend. It's fab, trust me.

So far i've cooked paella, marinated lamb and a fry up for breakie (for 14!). Our next challenge is to try making flat breads on it. It's pretty versitle and dead easy to clean. Also nice to cook round a fire, keeping warm (sometimes too damn hot) and being sociable.

Once you've done your cooking, you then pour some water in it and use a wooden spatula to scrape any food off and there you are, clean! This definately has permanent space in our camper van now, bring on our next big trip.

Anyone else got one? If you've got any good recipes for it, pass them on - thanks!

Fired Up

Hi Flipper - looks a good piece of kit - more potential for portability than my Smokey Joe. Could see my storing it away in one of the kid's bodyboard bags. Have you tried it with BBQ coals or charcoal underneath? I'm just curious - stuff cooked like this can taste great - I'm just wondering about places where's the not much in the way of firewood.

Recipes: I'll tell ya what would work well here - grab a couple of tins of (organic) chick peas, a stick of chorizo, some coriander & a bit of salt and pepper. Bit of olive oil, heat it up, cut up your chorizo into chunky rings, fry them til the colour starts to run all orangey into the oil. Drain your chick peas, pour them on, mix around, add the coriander just before serving. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with chunks of crusty bread or into pittas. 5-10 minutes max ! Takes longer downing the merlot that goes well with this!

Cheers,
BB

either way

Hi BB,

Sounds good, thanks for the recipe - seamlessly moving on from the paella! I'm loving my chorizo at the moment. Might have to eak out the cooking time just to enjoy it a bit more, and as you say the merlot. Perhaps we could try making the breads to go with them?? Apparantly a flat bread is easy on it.

As for fuel, I've used both wood and charcoal. Charcoal because I was far too lazy to get the fire going for breakfast after a big night - and it worked a treat. I did use heaps, much more than I needed as the charcoal gets really hot. We carry a stack of wood in the van now as we've got the little wood burning stove too.

We're off to Europe and Morocco for the autumn so i hope we're going to be able to find enough on our travels. Otherwise the roof rack will have to be stacked before we leave!!

Now I've got all dreamy and it's only Monday - rock on the weekend!
Cheers, Philippa
