Wrong surf report

By RobM at 9:24am on 7th Dec, 2007

Sam,

Why does it only show 2.5ft on the forecast summary map, if you could see what i saw out of my window this morning you would realise its an out of control 8-10ft plus!

I would use your forecasts as i love the site but they dont seem to represent the conditions i find at many of the places i go, seems not to take into account local conditions/wind directions etc.

Sorry to moan, it just seems strange when its blatantly massive and wales is showing 5ft, double what you are showing in the 'wall of corn'!

Rob

Big stormy

Hi Rob - Don't worry about moaning I appreciate the feedback, I just apologise that I couldn't get back to you earlier but as you probably know I'm cavorting around Europe in the transit at the moment, so only get to check the site when I see an internet cafe. By the looks of things you've been having some big storms back home...

Here are links to the historic forecasts that you're referring so that people can take a look to see what we're talking about.

Historic forecast for Newquay - Fri 7 Dec 2007

Historic forecast for Freshwater West - Fri 7 Dec 2007

Breaking wave height is definately out on that day. The reason for this is that breaking wave height on the beach is experimental, and is tuned to give accurate results when the conditions are surfable. It looks like on those days it was the 'great washing machine of life' out there with onshore winds between 40 and 50 mph. The star rating was ether 1 or zero (how the star ratings work) meaning that there were 'lumps' coming through, large ones by the sounds of things but the wave quality would have been poor.

Another thing to note is that breaking wave height is the 'literal' height of the wave just before it breaks and pitches, so a forecasted 4ft wave is not going to be head high but more shoulder/chest.

Hopefully on those days when the conditions are stormy with a low star rating and manic winds people won't be disapointed when they get to the beach.

But the long and the short of it is that breaking wave height should work better in these sorts of conditions, but I've been skint for the last year and haven't been able to do any work on the site. Things are looking up next year and I might be getting some support giving me a chance to improve breaking wave height and loads of other areas of the site that I've itching to fix/improve.

Anyway is that as clear as mud or does it make a bit more sense?

No worries hombre!

It was more of an observation, it doesnt reallly matter too much what the report says as i can see Newquay bay from the back of my house and Fistral out of my front room so i can eyeball it from the house. I just didnt expect it to say that.

I am impressed with the site, good work and enjoy your travels!
Rob M :)
