New reef design - Freds wave

By Sam at 10:19am on 29th Dec, 2007

Found this on youtube showing a new design for an Artifical Surfing Reef. Looks interesting and is producing perfectly shaped waves in the test pool at the moment.

Bring on the perfect peaks!!

Where I grew up in Huntington Beach there's a spot that only breaks on big swells called "box cars" that got it's name from the dumping of old rail cars many years ago. It's just a giant mush ball but it's a perfect peak, we always talked about artificial reefs as kids thinking they would eventually be all over the world. I'm really surprised that someone hasn't come up with something that would help the ecosystem & produce killer waves.

Bring on the help

Hello Bryce and everyone

I am the person that took up the mission to make a good reef system that is environmentally and user friendly and we now have what you see in this video . With encouragement from unlikely sources i have since had some more brainstorming sessions with good results ,in that i now have two more methods to increase wave size and quality for us to use in the next upscale model test session .(hopefully 1 : 3 scale) that grommits can enjoy .
The most remarkable feature of this reef design are the convolutions , while watching my favorite video (young guns 2) i noticed a helicopter shot of Kelly Slater at Rifles where you clearly see these convolutions , all other features of the design came from a constant desire to have it in use at all times i.e. The top edge of the reef is adjustable so you can match the depth to wave height and the the whole reef will move in and out with the tide to keep that height at a constant , surf all day . I am also working on a method of using downward wave surge (after the top edge) for generating energy to power underwater lights ,surf all night .
This vision started in august 2005 and the design could not have been so successful if others were involved, (a journey with strange twists and turns ) , but now its about 90% complete i am receiving assistance from a professional group with honorable intentions in terms of IP and fund raising for the upscale testing .
If you have any ideas with funding or where we can do test, please help.
I have to stress that this system is particularly well suited for places with smaller waves and that have a community of surfers willing to manipulate such a system and reap the rewards , a completely automatic version will come in the future but it will be expensive and is a step to take later on .
Because the reef moves with the tide there should be little effect on the environment but i can not be 100% sure , all the ocean forces and variants can only be watched in its daily life, but the reef is held with two main anchors when in use so if the need arises it can move in either direction along the beach .
I will ask Sam for help with more images and a video that will interest you ,i have limited computer skills.

p.s. the guys that made the video created an extreme video site called "skuff tv" check it out .

A new "round" surf pool concept

wave pools

These have got to be the way of the future. Both a round pool and a rectilinear pool both have a part to play.

Its a field owned by no-one and its excellent that people with good intentions are there to add to the awareness and progress of the art and science - lets hope it stays that way.

Of course IP is the propery of the inventor and lets hope they are realistic in allowing that to be implemented at lowest cost possible without unrealistic "frills".
